Abstract

The publication presents the results of the analysis of the survey of teachers and students on the state of distance education and the quality of e-learning courses in higher education institutions in Ukraine and on the methodological principles of their improvement. The aim of the work is to determine the prerequisites that affect the state of distance learning in Ukraine and to determine the directions and methods of improving e-learning courses as the main element of distance education. To achieve the purpose of the study the following tasks were performed: analysis of publications and formulation of hypotheses about the state of the distance learning system of higher education institutions in Ukraine, teaching methods and content of e-learning courses; questions were formulated and the methodology of the survey and results processing were determined; the sample of the survey was substantiated; the results of the survey were processed and further directions and methods for improving e-learning courses within universities were identified. The survey involved 176 students and 51 teachers from 9 higher education institutions of Ukraine. The questionnaire contained open-ended and multiple-choice questions. Ranking was used to motivate respondents to prioritize their answers. Some questions of the questionnaire were aimed at formulating the preconditions that significantly affect the educational process, in particular, the preconditions related to the war. The survey also revealed the general perception of the teachers and students of distance learning. The survey focused on the online learning methods used by teachers and students and their attitudes towards these methods. A significant part of the questions were formulated in a similar way for teachers and students to understand the vision of the same problem. An interesting result of the survey is that the perceptions of the advantages, disadvantages and ways to improve e-courses by teachers and students largely coincide. Respondents also answered the question what knowledge and skills they would like to acquire for more effective learning in online format. A significant number of students said that they have a lack of the skills that are acquired in practical classes, some students need additional competencies in self-management in order to plan their time more effectively during online learning, and many students would like to better master software products that contribute to effective learning in the online format. Teachers would like to gain more competencies in working with software, modern educational platforms and methods of organizing learning in small groups.
